Sadly, though poetry is one of the most difficult writing forms to master, it’s not an area where many writers find fame and fortune, unless of course they are amongst the talented and prolific who find a particular slot ideally suited to their talents. As I write, my local paper conveys news of the death of Patience Strong, whose inspirational verses graced greetings cards and many, many magazines, and other publications for over fifty years. Writers of her calibre are in very short supply, but if one person has carved a career in the way she did, it can be done again. Just don't seek an early fortune this way.
If we include light verse within this category, then we are able to suggest a possible opener for the 'poet' in the letters' pages of worldwide magazines.
Poetry competitions are perhaps the best way to earn from your talents. There are many publications aimed solely at writers of poetry, many paying, albeit small fees. But some also carry competitions on a regular basis, prizes for which can often be extremely attractive. Keep your eyes open for such competitions in the pages of poetry or general writing magazines, or in the competitions pages of the excellent Freelance Press Services bulletin.
